2012 gave us two rare celestial events: the transit of Venus in June -- when telescope aficionados headed to Mt. Wilson, above, and elsewhere -- and an annular eclipse, also known as a ring of fire eclipse, in May. The United States won't see another annular eclipse until 2023. And if you missed the transit of Venus, when that planet's orbit takes it between the Earth and the sun, you'll have to wait until 2117 to experience it.
