Helen Thomas' blunt questions and sharp tone helped her make her way in a field dominated by men. The correspondent's journalistic career bridged the years between the time people got their news from radio, newspapers and movie newsreels to today's 24-hour cable and Internet news cycle. When she began in journalism, most female reporters wrote about social events. She pushed for more. Along the way, she became the unofficial head of the White House press corps, closing years of presidential news conferences with her signature line: "Thank you, Mr. President." Thomas is seen above in 2007.
