In "Born on the Fourth of July," Tom Cruise played Ron Kovic, a real-life veteran paralyzed in Vietnam who became an antiwar activist. Kovic wrote the memoir on which Oliver Stone's 1989 movie was based. Vietnam veteran and former Navy Secretary Jim Webb, now a Democratic senator in Virginia, said of Kovic before the movie's release: "He had every right to do what he did. He certainly served, which is a lot more than a lot of people did. But I really feel that the [war protest] experiences of people like Ron Kovic in no way represent what the average veteran did. And to continue to focus on them, I think, skews our understanding of the war."
