A year ago, high school teammates Max Fried and Lucas Giolito from Studio City Harvard-Westlake had plenty to celebrate on the opening day of the MLB amateur draft.
Fried, a left-handed pitcher, went No. 7 to the San Diego Padres. Giolito, a right-hander, went No. 16 to the Washington Nationals.
Fried, who signed for $3 million, is considered one of the top prospects in the Padres organization.
He's 2-1 with a 4.30 earned-run average and 43 strikeouts in 44 innings for Class-A Fort Wayne in the Midwest League.
Giolito signed for $2.925 million. The Nationals knew that Giolito might need elbow surgery, and that's what happened Aug. 31.
He's scheduled to have his first rehab start on July 3 in the Instructional League in Florida.
