UC Santa Barbara student beaten and gang raped, authorities say

A 19-year-old student at UC Santa Barbara was beaten and raped by a group of men this weekend, authorities said.

It is unclear where the rape occurred, but it happened sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

The student was able to return to her residence in Isla Vista and notify her roommate and authorities, the sheriff's office said. She was then transported by ambulance to a local hospital for an examination and treatment of her injuries.

Deputies and other officers were using a canine unit to search Isla Vista and campus areas to try to find the location of the incident.

Authorities told KTLA that earlier on Saturday there had been another report of sexual assault in Isla Vista when a woman said she was outside of a party and attacked around 1:30 a.m.
