In a bloody rampage that turned a children's summer camp into a scene of horror, Buford O. Furrow Jr., an avowed white supremacist, shot five people at the North Valley Jewish Community Center. Panicked parents who descended on the center were held back as a group of preschoolers holding hands was escorted across the street by police officers. The image of children fleeing the bullet-riddled community center attracted worldwide attention and reignited calls for gun control and racial tolerance. Furrow later also admitted to fatally shooting Joseph Ileto, a Filipino American mail carrier.
