For the adjacent bar at the Standard, Alesch and Standefer flipped the bar-restaurant design convention: The restaurant is dense and clubby, and the bar is bright and friendly. You can take a space that's typically dark, Standefer said, and make it light and beautiful. One detail not seen in this shot: To create visual interest along the floor, the designers dipped the legs of Thonet chairs in white paint. "We call them 'socks' or 'deer feet,' " Alesch said. They routed a small gutter around the cafe tables to evoke the rims of cutting boards, and they painted the gutters white to pick up on the hooves on the herd of chairs.
