Alfred Eisenstaedt's candid shot of a sailor kissing a nurse on Aug. 15, 1945, in Times Square during the V-J Day celebrations, which marked the Japanese surrender and the end of World War II, is the most reproduced picture in the history of Life magazine. The identity of the woman in the photo was long in question, but Edith Shain, a retired Los Angeles school district teacher, is certain she's the nurse in the photo. She wrote to Life magazine in 1980. Eisenstaedt verified the claim when the two met.
