"Boho chic" has evolved into an evergreen style in Southern California — thanks to perma-boho celebs including Nicole Richie and Lauren Conrad. And piling on beaded necklaces, bracelets and earrings is an easy way to channel the hippie-luxe look.
If you're looking to build your bead wardrobe, head to the Pasadena Bead and Design Show — a four-day shopping exhibition and trade show featuring more than 300 artisan booths showcasing loose beads (vintage and new), finished jewelry and a clutch of crafty fashion (felt vests and hand-made hats, for instance).
This year's show, which will take over the Pasadena Hilton Thursday through Sunday, will include more than 200 vendors showing handmade, vintage and antique beads. Think hand-blown glass, chiseled gemstones and etched silver and gold. A handful of booths will offer vintage fashion and accessories.
Vendors to look out for include the Lipstick Ranch, which specializes in handmade and hand-painted rusted iron pendants shaped like classic pistols, cowgirls and bull's heads (among other Old West silhouettes); Beads by Sandy, a company that makes bohemian beads and buttons; and Nomad Style, which offers fun tribal jewelry and textiles.
The four-day event will also include more than 100 hands-on workshops and classes in jewelry design, bead making and fiber arts. There will be offerings for both the beginner and the veteran crafter, taught by big-shot artisans in the mediums of art clay, silver, polymer clay, bead making, soldering, jewelry design, mixed media, glass pendants, fiber arts, metalwork and wirework.
"The show is really for people who want to buy directly from artists, and for people who want to experiment," said event spokeswoman Anna Johnson "It celebrates the idea of having a style all your own."
