Situated on a creek and surrounded by sycamore trees and native plants, Johnson’s design blends into — and stands apart from — its environment. “I’ve always loved Philip Johnson’s Glass House,” Russell Johnson says of the iconic modern masterpiece in New Canaan, Conn. “I liked the idea of doing something similar, but an all-glass house performs very poorly both from an environmental and practical standpoint.” The Sycamore House, he says, tries to be aesthetically appealing yet functional and environmentally pragmatic.
