At $150 million and $65 million, two houses — neither being marketed through multiple listing services — are quietly defining the top end of the for-sale market in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
When the late billionaire Roland Arnall, founder of Ameriquest Capital Corp., and his wife, Dawn, bought it in 2002, they also nabbed two adjacent properties to increase the grounds to 10 acres.
The 12,201-square-foot main house, built in 1936, had eight bedrooms and 10 bathrooms when last listed on the MLS. There is a tennis court, a pool house and a swimming pool. Public relations for the Agency in Beverly Hills is not releasing details about the property, even though area agents have toured it and seen a brochure.
The last estate listed at this price in the county was Candy Spelling's Manor, also in Holmby Hills. That 56,500-square-foot mansion, with 14 bedrooms, 27 bathrooms and a 4.7-acre site, sold for $85 million after about two years on the market.
In Laguna Beach, a one-acre oceanfront compound is being floated at $65 million. Between the neoclassical main house, guesthouse, decks, loggias, storage and garage there is 25,000 square feet of space. Completed in 2010 after an eight-year undertaking, the main house has four bedrooms, two offices, two powder rooms, five fireplaces, a wine cellar and tasting room and a billiards room.
