Nora Ephron, the author-playwright-screenwriter-director, grew up in Beverly Hills and after establishing her career on the East Coast came back to Hollywood, writing and directing hit movies including "Sleepless in Seattle," "When Harry Met Sally..." and "Julie & Julia." Her protagonists, which included the chef Julia Child and the whistleblower Karen Silkwood, were often women and just as typically as capable, if not more so, than the men around them. She was nominated for an original screenplay Oscar three times, and the films that she wrote and/or directed have grossed more than $700 million.
