'Amour'

A dark horse nominee to the vast majority of the public that hasn't seen it, "Amour" is a small story of a couple facing one member's decline that resonates enormously. In theme, plot and even setting, it harks to "Madame Rosa," 1978's foreign-language winner. Starring another giant of French cinema, Simone Signoret, the story centered on the enduring love between her character and her young charge Momo. As Madame Rosa's mind and body deteriorate, Momo stays by her side with a fierce devotion.
