"Rest in peace Triona, so heartbreaking x," "The A Team" singer tweeted after finding out the teen had passed away. Before lunchtime that day, he'd been on the phone singing her the tune "Little Bird" from his 2010 album "Loose Change." He was reportedly her favorite singer, and "Little Bird" her favorite song.
Triona's brother Colm, along with his sister's friends, started a #SongForTri Twitter campaign last week after she revealed her dying wish, Ireland's Independent reported Wednesday. The Independent got involved in the campaign to facilitate getting in touch with Sheeran through his manager.
"What they gave us and her was a beautiful last moment together. Triona slipped into a sleep as Ed was singing to her and passed away shortly afterwards," Colm Priestley told the paper. "So Ed Sheeran sang her to sleep."
Sheeran on Sunday had tweeted at Triona, "@trionaaa get well soon dude and il see you when I’m over in October xx.” He was later told of the severity of her condition, and the phone call was arranged, acording to Evoke.ie.
Friend Lucy Hanlon reportedly took to Facebook to pass along the news of Triona's final day.
"Ed’s manager Stuart Camp emailed me and today Ed rang Triona and personally sang Little Bird to her as she took her last breaths," she wrote, according to the Daily Mail. "Triona left us listening to her idol surrounded by all the people who loved her."
Triona had been in intensive care for about two weeks before she died.
