Tonys 2013: Will Michael Bloomberg receive special honor?

Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York has created a financial news empire, sustained a successful political career and amassed a personal fortune in the billions. Will he add a Tony to his list of accomplishments?

Tony Award organizers haven't made any official announcement, but New York Post theater columnist Michael Riedel wrote on Wednesday that Bloomberg will be presented with a special honor at the annual Tony ceremony on Sunday at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The Post reported that Bloomberg will receive a special Tony "honor," not an "award," in recognition of the city's record tourism levels. The mayor has already been active on the pre-Tony circuit, including attending last week's nominee luncheon where he addressed the room full of stage stars.

Tourists account for the majority of tickets purchased on Broadway. According to a report for the 2011-12 season, visitors to New York bought approximately 63.4% of all Broadway tickets. The report was published by the Broadway League, one of the organizers of the Tonys.

The Tony Awards will be broadcast live on CBS on Sunday evening, with a delay for the West Coast. Starting time is 8 p.m. on both coasts.
