PULITZER WINNER: Henry Brant acknowledges applause after a performance in Los Angeles. He liked to use large numbers of musicians scattered in clusters around performance areas, whether it was a concert hall, a reflecting pool or even a river. He also worked as a conductor during the 1930s and '40s and orchestrated film scores for Virgil Thomson and Alex North.
