"American Gangster" Who felt slighted? Drug Enforcement Administration agents and New York Police Department officers The charge: In a lawsuit filed Oct. 22, a group of retired DEA agents and New York Police Department officers sued Frank Lucas (who Denzel Washington portrayed in American Gangster); New York Media LCC, the publishers of New York Magazine; journalist Mark Jacobson; and Grove/Atlantic Inc., the publishers of a book by Jacobson that was the basis of the movie. The lawsuit says Lucas libeled the former law enforcers by claiming they stole $9 million to $10 million in 1975. Earlier, other retired DEA agents and NYPD officers sued NBC Universal, the producers of the movie, claiming they were defamed in the movies closing credits, which basically said the narcotics cops involved were corrupt. A federal court ruled against the plaintiffs and they have appealed.
