South African runner Caster Semenya acknowledges adoring crowds upon her return to her homeland after winning a gold medal in the women's 800-meter race at the world track championships in Berlin last week. The stunning victory was clouded when some opponents accused Semenya of being a man, and the sport's governing body ordered the athlete to undergo a battery of gender tests. Results may not be known for several months.
