The Backstretch Blog: Playoffs? You wanna talk playoffs?

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.Matt Kenseth

Okay, let's talk playoffs. There are technically eight drivers still alive to make the NASCAR Chase for the Championship. But unless your name is Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon or Kyle Busch, you basically have to win and get some help to get in.

"We're confident coming into this weekend," said Busch. "We feel like we've always done well here.  We have really good notes that we have a good basis for being able to run well here and have a good foundation to start practice with.  We'll continue to do some of the same things that we've always done here in the past to make our car what it needs to be for the race on Saturday night."

Gordon also likes his chances in Richmond.

"We're going with guns loaded ready to do battle. This race is always intense and I expect it to be a pretty crazy night," said Gordon. "I've been saying all along that I think it's going to come down to the last lap at Richmond - and we're going to fight all the way down to that last lap."

For Kahne, he really just has to show up and race clean at Richmond. His two wins make him all but a lock for one of the final two chase spots.

"We had a solid finish at Richmond in the spring, and we need another one this weekend," said Kahne "Our cars have been really fast on the short tracks all year. We need to put together a full race and get ourselves into the Chase on Saturday night."

Kahne, Gordon, and Busch are all former Richmond winners. And of course we all know that Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson have both been nails at the Virginia short track. Other past winners include Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart and Jeff Burton.
