The Backstretch Blog: Bowyer on the Backstretch

Another top 10 for Emporia native Clint Bowyer at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, has him right in the thick of the points race. Bowyer finished the Coca Cola 600 eighth and is now up to forth in the standings. All good things for CB as the month of May comes to an end, its a month and a string of races that has not been that great for him in the past.

“The month of May has been tough on me historically and we got through it half-way decent," said Bowyer. "We didn’t have the finishes we wanted, but we didn’t have terrible finishes and that goes a long way towards moving forward to the summer months and not having to look over your back. Now we can continue to hone in and work on speed and racing for wins.”

Thursday is Bowyer's birthday, he turns 34 years old. And you know he would like nothing more than to grab his first Monster trophy in Dover this weekend. But the Monster Mile has been a challenge for the Kansas Kid. He has just one top five and seven top tens in 14 previous races.

"At Dover you just have to race hard," said Bowyer. "That’s not a track that you can let your guard down at all. You have to be up on the wheel every lap and you have to have to whole package. You can’t be off in any way, shape or form in any area or you’re in trouble.”

Since joining with crew chief Brian Pattie a year ago, Bowyer has found success at track were he has struggled in the past, like Sonoma and Charlotte. He thinks Bowyer can get it done at Dover as well.

"Clint is fast at Dover," said Pattie. "That’s one of his better tracks. June is full of tracks that he’s pretty good at and he likes a lot, so we have to capitalize on that. He had two solid races at Dover last year and we just need to find a tic more speed and execute throughout the event and I’m sure we’ll run really well.”
