Five Shootings In 24 Hours Have Rural Community On Edge

A string of drive-by shootings is frightening motorists in the Valley Springs area.

Five instances of an individual shooting at passing vehicles have been reported over the last two days, according to officials with the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department.

The latest incident involved a 49-year-old man driving in the westbound lane of Highway 26 near Silver Rapids. The victim described a vehicle with its high-beam headlamps on approaching his in the opposite lane around 6:10am Tuesday.

Four similar incidents were reported within a short period of time Tuesday. Moderate damage to vehicles, including shattered windshields, were reported. So far, there have been no injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate who may be shooting at the vehicles.
