LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- California Department of Toxic Substances Control has released a list of nail polishes that could harm thousands of women.
Investigators chose 25 brands at random -- including some listed as being toxin-free -- and tested them for the so-called "toxic trio" of chemicals.
Those chemicals -- toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde -- have high levels of agents that can cause birth defects, according to state chemical regulators.
Investigators said 10 of 12 products that claimed to be free of toluene actually contained it. Four of the products had dangerously high levels.
Additionally, five of seven products that said they were free of all three chemicals actually had one or more of them in significant levels.
The products the state says were mislabeled include: Sation 99 basecoat, Sation 53 red-pink nail color, Dare to Wear nail lacquer, Chelsea 650 Baby's Breath Nail Lacquer, New York Summer Nail Color, Paris Spicy 298 nail lacquer, Sunshine nail lacquer, Cacie Light Free Gel Basecoat, Cacie Sun Protection Topcoat, Golden Girl Topcoat, Nail Art Top-N-Seal and High Gloss Topcoat.
The DTSC says it doesn't have enough data to estimate how many people are being exposed to the chemicals through the products.
The chemicals themselves are not illegal. But the state attorney general's office will decide if the false claims on the products' labels are.
Miss Professional Nail Products, Inc., which makes Sation products and others on the list, disputes the findings.
