Unique charter school to open in Chula Vista

SAN DIEGO - A school in Chula Vista will soon be offering educating students from early childhood to their career.

Susan Mitchell practically gushes when talking about theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.

“He has truly been a wonderful advocate for science, and yet this young man is in a wheelchair, can’t talk, can’t do anything,” she said.

That’s one of the reasons why Mitchell is excited that a new, unique charter school in Chula Vista will be named after Hawking.  The Stephen W. Hawking Math and Science Charter School will open in July.

“Truly starting this school from a pre-k and taking it to grade 13-16 is where we’re very different from any other charter really in the state,” she said.

The curriculum will offer a program of study in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (S.T.E.A.M.).  Mitchell said educating students from cradle to career.

“The S.T.E.A.M. curriculum is about exploration, it’s about modeling, explanation and then being able to defend,” she said.

The school will open with 150 students in July, enrolling student’s pre-k to the 3rd grade.

“Every year, we add two grades and so in about 3 years we’ll be finishing up with the pre-k through sixth,” said Mitchell.

And eventually the school will offer a course of study for students 13 – 16th grades.
