FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A 21-year-old Fort Collins man was being treated for serious injuries Tuesday after he was struck by a police cruiser in the intersection of Elizabeth and Remington streets.

The collision occurred shortly before 2 a.m. when, according to Fort Collins Police, the officer was driving west on Elizabeth while responding to a report of a man trying to open car doors.

The bicyclist, Thomas Wagner, was traveling north on Remington when the front of the patrol car hit him.

He was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital with serious injuries. Police say he was not wearing a helmet.

“At the time of the collision, the traffic lights were on flash,” said Sgt. Joel Tower. “Traffic on Remington had a flashing yellow light while traffic on Elizabeth had a flashing red light. The bicycle had no lights or reflectors.”

Police believe Wagner may have been drunk at the time of the collision.

“The speed of the officer’s vehicle may also be a contributing factor,” Tower said.

The officer was identified as Todd Brubaker, an 11 year veteran of the Fort Collins Police force.

Charges are pending.
