Fairhaven

The historic Fairhaven District of Bellingham is one of my favorite places in the Northwest. I love the feel of it and the people. It has an eclectic mix of restaurants, a book store, toy and furniture shops -- all in the shadow of Western Washington University. Many of the buildings here were built at the turn of the last century, beautifully preserved! The Colophon Cafe is one of my favorite spots. It's a cool little restaurant that overlooks the Village Green. I always order a bowl of African Peanut Soup (tomato base, peanuts, turkey, ginger and hot pepper) and a whole grain roll. It's wonderful comfort food on a hot summer day or a rainy winter afternoon. The natural light against the old brick and stone walls is striking, even on a cloudy day. I also make a point to stop at Tony's Coffee, one of the oldest coffee houses in the region. It's a great place to get a mocha and read a book. Speaking of books, Village Books, is a wonderful place to take the kids after lunch. It has a great children's book section and a helpful staff of bookworms; and there are plenty of spots to sit and read.
