Jason Vargas brought his best stuff to the Tokyo Dome, but could not get the run support from The Mariners' offense.
Vargas left the game with one out in the seventh inning as the Mariners were clinging to a 1-0 lead. Relief pitcher Shawn Kelley then gave up a two-run homer to The Oakland Athletics' prized rookie Yoenis Cespedes--his first as a major league player.
A's right fielder Josh Reddick followed suit, taking relief pitcher George Sherill deep with a solo home run.
The M's were quiet with the bats, only pumping out three hits. The lone run came from a Justin Smoak's home run in the seventh.
Both teams head back to Arizona to finish up Spring Training and will continue their regular seasons with a rematch next Friday in Oakland.
