Patricia D. Shearer, a retired medical administrator and a pilot who flew for the Maryland Civil Air Patrol, died Aug. 23 of colon cancer at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson.
She was 76.
Patricia D. McVay was born in Baltimore and raised on Camp Meade Road in Linthicum. She was a graduate of Anne Arundel County public schools.
Mrs. Shearer worked for years as a medical administrator and at the time of her 1997 retirement, she was working for Dr. J. Dennis Branger at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
The former Reisterstown resident, who had lived at Walker Manor Apartments for the last 20 years, was a licensed pilot.
For 12 years until retiring in 1996 with the rank of lieutenant colonel, Mrs. Shearer had been a pilot for the search and rescue team of the Maryland Civil Air patrol.
From 1997 until 2009, she volunteered at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, where she was particularly interested in caring for its monkeys.
"The monkeys will miss the treats she prepared for them," said her daughter, Donna Shearer of Baltimore.
Mrs. Shearer enjoyed reading and traveling.
Her husband of 19 years, Donald Shearer, a financial administrator, died in 1970.
A private memorial service will be held in the fall.
Also surviving are two grandchildren and her companion, Leonard Gostomski of Dundalk.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
