Nancy L. Gould, a Bible study teacher who aided in the development of a Washington County home for mentally and physically challenged adults, died Sunday in her sleep of unknown causes at Homewood Suites, a Hagerstown hotel.
The Severna Park resident was 72.
"We were in Hagerstown for a volunteer fundraiser for Star Community," said her husband of 46 years, Dr. William Michael Gould III, a dermatologist who is a member of the home's board.
The daughter of the former CEO of Augusta Federal Savings & Loan and a homemaker, the former Nancy Luette Engroff was born in Baltimore and raised in Catonsville and Towson.
After graduating in 1957 from Towson High School, she enrolled at Hood College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1961.
In 1962, she married her junior high school sweetheart and while he was attending medical school, she taught biology at Dundalk Senior High School for four years.
In 1965, she gave birth to her son, William M. Gould IV, who was severely physically challenged and has resided at the Star Community since 1990.
Mrs. Gould began volunteering in 1990 with the Anita Lynne Home in Hagerstown, which later became the Star Community, a Christian-based home for those who are severely mentally and physically challenged.
For more than 25 years, Mrs. Gould had been a leader and teacher with Bible Study Fellowship International, a nondenominational Christian Bible study program.
"She trained and mentored women all over the Northeast," her husband said.
Mrs. Gould was an active member of Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she had been the wedding coordinator for many years.
The former Cockeysville resident, who moved to Severna Park in 1995, was a world traveler.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at her church, 114 Gov. Ritchie Highway in Pasadena.
In addition to her husband of 49 years and her son, Mrs. Gould is survived by her daughter, Kristin Drake of Mount Washington; a brother, Richard Engroff of Patton, Maine; and four granddaughters.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
