The AHA refers to smoking as "the most important preventable cause of premature death in the United States." Smoking decreases the level of "good cholesterol" and increases the risk of heart disease. A lesser-known fact, is that people regularly exposed to second-hand smoke increase their risk of developing heart disease by 25-30 percent. Lungs can start healing immediately upon quitting smoking.
