Yunnan Province, China

Michael R. Sharon of Vernon submitted this photo, taken during a recent family vacation to Yunnan Province in southwest China. Writes Dr. Sharon: Yunnan "is rich in culture and has great natural beauty. The province extends from the tropical Burmese border to the Tibetan Himalayan Mountains. The photograph from the crystal-clear Black Dragon Pool, constructed in 1739, is part of a provincial park about a 20-minute walk from the old city of Lijiang, which is listed by UNESCO as the best-preserved ancient city in China. The temples in the background were built during the Ming Dynasty (1601), and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain … has several glaciers at the lowest latitude (27 degrees) in the Northern Hemisphere (same as Tampa, Fla.)."
