Dave Cain (left) and Zack Munzer, both of North Haven, drift to shore at Harbor Park in Middletown after taking a kayak trip down the rain-swollen Mattabesset and Connecticut Rivers Tuesday. The Canoe Club restaurant behind them is already under several feet of water. The Connecticut River is not expected to crest at about 16 feet until 10:00 p.m. or midnight Tuesday night, according to Middletown Deputy Fire Chief Robert Kronenberger. At about 10:00 a.m. Tuesday the river was at about 13.5 feet. Flood stage is 8 feet. Cain and Munzer put in near the Saw Mill Pub in Cromwell and floated gently down the Mattabesset in what they described as an "awesome" trip. The current increased dramatically once they hit the Connecticut. The 2.75 mile trip took about an hour and a half. "It's very unique when it's flooded like this," said Munzer. "You can come up here 80 times and never see it like this."
