McAlister Intermediate

McAlister Intermediate fifth-grader Jackie Pines, 11, holds the Confederate flag during the Call to Arms ceremony at the beginning of the Civil War Re-enactment day. Pines, a private in the 1st Regiment of Virginia, participated in the re-enactment with other fifth-graders at the Suffield school where they learned about the 29th Connecticut Infantry Regiment which was primarily an African-American regiment during the Civil War as well as infantry clothing, diet, battle wounds, photography, relaxation and the issue of slavery during the war. This is the first year the re-enactment has been held at McAlister and the third annual Civil War re-enactment day in Suffield. Patrick Raycraft, Hartford Courant
