The airline's Windsor call center shut down at the end of the workday on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009. The center had 700 employees when it moved from downtown Hartford in 2002, and fewer than 500 on its last day. Other employees will continue answering phones for American Airlines, but not as a unified group. About 180 will now work at home, several employees said -- at sharply reduced pay and benefits. About 80 are retiring. Many will file for unemployment benefits, and slightly more than 100 are transferring to one of three remaining American Airlines call centers, the nearest in Raleigh, N.C.
