Flooding at the Nutmeg Companies of Norwich

Evert Gawendo, one of the owners of The Nutmeg Companies Inc., a general contracting firm located on the banks of the Yantic River, inspects the flood damage to his business Wednesday afternoon. He and his staff worked frantically throughout the day Monday and Tuesday installing concrete blocks and sandbags surrounding his building, but at 5 p.m. Tuesday the river won and crested around the barriers and flooded the buildings, destroying everything inside. The river water reached a depth of 3 feet inside the building. The force of the rushing river toppled refrigerators, desks and chairs and destroyed valuable equipment.
