NEW YORK (WPIX) - The legendary Apollo Theater honored fallen icon Michael Jackson on Tuesday afternoon with a special series of events commemorating his life.

"I wish he was alive to see the love in the crowd that got together and united," one adoring fan told PIX News. "It's a sad day but it's also a good day...I wish the best for his family."

The Apollo hosted a public tribute allowing fans to hear DJs spinning Michael's music, leave memorabilia, and write sympathy messages on a special mural wall located outside the property.

The doors of the Apollo Theater opened at 2 p.m. and will close at 9 p.m. for fans to celebrate The King of Pop's life through song and eulogies, theater officials announced Monday.

"I used to work for Motown and I can go back," said another fan in mourning. "It's hard for me to even talk about it."

Reverend Al Sharpton attended an event with a eulogy at 2 p.m.

"Michael Jackson represents to us something that we understand and understood when the whole world turned on Michael we never turned on Michael," said the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Mourners will be allowed in the Apollo Theater - 600 at a time - to pay their respects and lay flowers on the stage where Jackson first performed as a member of the Jackson 5 in 1967.

On Wednesday, the weekly Amateur Night at the Apollo will be dedicated to Jackson. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. and it will feature a moonwalking competition.
