Good fat. We talk about losing fat ... well how about using fat -- to make you more beautiful.
Dr. Gregory Wiener, Plastic Surgeon: "It's amazing what you can do with fat."
Eliza Bernal, Fat Transfer Patient: "Just look natural with no wrinkles and flawless.
Eliza Bernal has tried Botox and fillers in her face to achieve a younger appearance but nothing lasts. She wants a fix that won't fade.
Eliza Bernal: "I have two kids and I have a house to run and not have to think about all the time how you look."
So she came for a double bonus, a fat transfer.
Eliza Bernal: "I'm having liposuction on my stomach and the fat injected into my face."
Dr. Wiener: "When you are trying to revolumize something with fat, you are really banking on the fact that those fat cells are going to stay alive and you are going to get a permanent result.
The key is how the fat is handled.
Dr. Wiener: "Techniques to harvest the fat to suction it and actually to inject it as well that are meant to kind of baby the fat so that really as much of the fat cells stay alive as possible. And that's really the name of the game, keeping the tissue alive and injecting live cells that are actually going to survive there. You can rejuventate the face with it. Number one, the aging face kind of deflates and you can really revolumize it with fat. You can revolumize aging hands. Women with defects who have had lumpectonies can also be improved with fat."
And it's all done in the office while the patient is awake.
First the removal. Then the replacement. Within weeks the reveal. Recovery takes a bit longer than fillers since the process requires more injections. But they last.
The cost is about three times what you'd pay for fillers. Doctors say 70 to 80-percent of fat cells survive and stay. In the future they hope to mix the fat with stem cells to insure survival even better.
