Millions of Americans, mostly women, take drugs for osteoporosis, or brittle bones. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is set to consider whether patients need to start taking a break from those drugs.

While there is little question that osteoporosis drugs have proven beneficial in preventing painful, debilitating fractures of the spine and hips, long-term use of the drugs has been linked to rare cases of thigh bone fractures, jawbone deterioration and possibly even cancer.
