Miami - To some, the phrase "mommy and me clothing" brings to mind unpleasant images of blousy, floral-drenched prints or children dressed jarringly like adults or worse, an adult woman like a child. However, Maria Fer Florida, a Miami resident and mother of two girls ages 4 and 18 months, liked the idea and decided to flip the concept on its ear.
With a background in environmental studies and a passion for fashion design, the stay-at-home mom decided to combine her interests and start an online boutique selling eco-friendly, hip, wearable items for mom and her littlest girlfriend.
"I really wanted to find trendy outfits for my girls and me to wear together," Florido said. "Not too matchy, not like twins, age appropriate - stylish and sexy for me, cute for the girls." The line Florido has created - sure to appeal to design-conscious moms and their tots - consists of swimsuits, beach cover-ups, and T-shirts and onesies with playful sayings (mom's tee says "Supply;" kid tee says "Demand"). MamaOm also features accessories and shoes for tots.
But it wasn't enough for the clothes to be a tasteful, smart interpretation of the mommy-and-me genre. Florido wanted the line to be environmentally responsible. MamaOm uses only 100 percent organic cotton and water-based ink for T-shirts and onesies, and recycled paper for tags and other like materials such as gift-wrap.
"We would have loved to use organic cotton for the swimsuits, too," Florido said. "But the cotton takes too long to dry, and it just bags and stretches when it's wet."
This fall, MamaOm is pleased to announce the launch of its organic cotton clothing line. "We are going to offer a selection of separates, which will include tunics, leggings, track suits, dresses and wraps," Florido said. "The clothes are items that moms and their girls can throw on and be comfortable and look good."
The items complement each other in the same way the swimsuits and T-shirts do: print leggings for child, solids for mom, mom's shirt has a bit of the print. In other words, the pieces refer to each other but don't look as if mommy is trying to dress like she's 5. Thanks to MamaOm, that matching floral nightmare is just a distant, scary memory.
