Rescue

Sarla Chand is brought out alive from the ruins of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital. The 65-year-old New Jersey woman survived more than 50 hours trapped under an enormous amount of concrete. "We had given up hope," she said in between bites of a biscuit. Chand was brought out from the building on a litter, but soon sat up and was alert enough to answer questions. She said there were five other people trapped alive in the rubble who needed to be rescued. She said that although she could speak to them, she could not see them in the darkness. "We were all confined," she added. Rescue personnel from France, Spain and the United States have been working to free the trapped people.
