SALT LAKE CITY—
The man accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart was hospitalized earlier this week. The U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah confirms to Fox 13 News that Brian David Mitchell was rushed to the hospital on Monday.

A spokeswoman for the federal prosecuting agency said Mitchell was treated for what is being described as a "minor medical condition." Mitchell was kept overnight for observation and then returned to the Salt Lake County Jail.

Mitchell is accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom back in 2002. A federal judge is deciding whether Mitchell is mentally competent to face trial for the crime.
