Region's (likely) first baby of 2014: It's a girl

The Baltimore region's likely first baby of the year is a girl born seven minutes after midnight Wednesday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson.

The hospital said Brooklyn Jane Branton, daughter of Hanover residents David and Dolly Branton, weighs five pounds, 13 ounces. She arrived nearly a month early, but both she and her mother are doing well, GBMC said.

"I'm so excited," Dolly Branton said in a statement. "I never thought that Brooklyn would be born on New Year's Day. God knows what he is doing."

In the last decade, the region's first babies of the new year arrived at GMBC in 2004, 2007 and 2010, the hospital said.

Anne Arundel Medical Center's first baby of 2014 arrived a half hour after Brooklyn Jane — to a mother whose birthday is also Jan. 1. Greensboro resident Tracey Johnston's son weighs 7 pounds, 5 ounces, the hospital said.

The University of Maryland Medical Center delivered its first baby of the year at 12:13 a.m., a spokeswoman said. Medstar's earliest baby was born at 3:11 a.m. at Harbor Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Mercy Medical Center could not be reached.
