Second Marylander dies from West Nile

A second person in Maryland has died from West Nile virus in what is one of the country's worst seasons for the disease.

State health officials are not releasing details about the deceased for privacy reasons.

The number of the state's West Nile cases has risen to 25 from 21 last week. The cases have been detected in people in 13 counties and all have been adults.

The state has been monitoring the virus and spraying in areas where mosquitos have been found with the disease. Read more about the state's efforts here.

West Nile season ends Oct. 31.

The number of the state's human cases of West Nile have varied over the years with 73 cases in the peak year of 2003, 23 in 2010 and 19 last year.
