Molluscan shellfish include fresh or frozen oysters, clam and mussels. Also on the list of foods to avoid are roe-on scallops, either shucked or in the shell, whole or in part.
Shellfish grown and produced in Maryland are not affected.
There are no recent cases of illness in Maryland known to be related to Korean shellfish.
The state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have issued the warning after federal regulators said shellfish from South Korea are unsafe for consumption.
The FDA has removed all certified dealers in the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program from its certified shippers list so that molluscan shellfish from Korea cannot be shipped to the United States.
DHMH is working with distributors and local health agencies to ensure that these products are removed from store shelves.
DHMH has this advise for consumers
- Before purchasing molluscan shellfish from a restaurant or grocery store, ask about the country of origin of the product. Do not purchase or eat if from South Korea. When in doubt, don't eat it.
- If you have already purchased these products, discard so that no person or animal can eat them.
- If you have eaten these products and are concerned about symptoms, contact your health care provider.
