READER SUBMITTED: Hartford Hospital's Institute Of Living To Hold Suicide Prevention Conference

Hartford Hospital's Institute of Living (IOL) will hold a free educational seminar for clinicians on suicide prevention among older adults. This event takes place on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 8:30-11:30 a.m., at Hartford Hospital's ERC Building Auditorium, 550 Hudson St., Hartford. This event is free of charge and is being held in connection with the World Health Organization's World Suicide Prevention Day.

"We know that suicide rates rise with age," said Harold I. Schwartz, IOL's psychiatrist-in-chief. "Given the wave of Baby Boomers entering their later years, there has never been a more important time for clinicians to share information about suicide later in life and to collaborate on preventative approaches."

The event will feature Yeates Conwell, MD, co-director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide and director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Division of the Department of Psychiatry, and director of the University of Rochester Medical Center's Office for Aging Research and Health Services.

IOL Medical Director Linda Durst, MD, will join Dr. Conwell to discuss a case study. The conference will close with Barbara Bennett Jacobs, PhD, MPH, RN, a member of the Hartford Hospital ethics committee, who will discuss the ethical issues related to suicide and older adults.
