Wadsworth Atheneum

Ben van Berkel, at right, of UN Studio explains the design of the planned expansion at the Wadsworth Atheneum with an architectural model showing the new interior, with an atrium that will be open to the public and will look into the exhibit spaces. At left, is Sylvia J. Smith, the principal in charge of the project for Fox and Fowle Architects, and Tobias Wallisser, creative director at UN Studio. The project was scrapped in 2004. The decision to scuttle the van Berkel plan was based on conclusions that it would be too expensive to build and operate and that the most precious asset of the nation's oldest public art museum was its history and its permanent collection.
