Billy Latta scored a power play goal with 5:04 remaining in the third period, a one-timer from Jordan Sims, and the UConn hockey team finished off a 2-1 victory over UMass in the consolation game of the UConn Hockey Classic Monday at the XL Center.
Freshman goalie Robby Nichols made 33 saves for the Huskies (7-6-2). UConn improves to 18-95-6 all-time against Hockey East teams. The Huskies join Hockey East next season.
Ryan Tyson gave UConn a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the third period, stuffing home a loose puck after Joey Ferris' shot from the point didn't make it through a crowd in the crease. UMass' Steven Guzzo tied it on a rebound goal with 10-plus minutes remaining.
After UConn killed a penalty for too many men, it went on the power play. Sims controlled the puck in the right corner and threaded a pass to Latta near the top of the left circle for the one-timer.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
