Dr. Sedrick Rawlins

Dr. Sedrick J. Rawlins, at left, of Manchester and Eugene Green, of Hartford, wave to the crowd along Albany Avenue during the African American Day parade in Hartford. The were in costume, depicting Connecticut's Black Governors, Rawlins as Governor Thomas Johnson, of New Haven, who served from 1883-1887 and Green as Governor Samuel Huntington, of Norwich who served from 1787-1800. The governors were elected leaders of the slave community, serving as a form of self government, and representing slaves outside their community.
