Why are the conservative members of the Party of Lincoln so upset about President Obama shaking hands with Raul Castro at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service? Got time for a little history lesson?
It has long been the favorite tool of conservative Republicans when dealing with our enemies. The Shun. It goes back to the cold war and maybe even before. When confronted with an enemy nation, the GOP preferred to ignore it, not recognize it diplomatically and to pretend it didn’t exist. Even when I was a teenager paying attention to world politics for the first time, I thought that policy was plain dumb and still do today. I always liked the Mafia’s attitude: keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
That’s why when President Richard Nixon went to China back in the 1970s it was such a big deal. Nixon was the Cold Warrior, a master shunner of the first magnitude and even he realized it was insane to not recognize the most populace country on Earth. It took some time, but President Jimmy Carter made it official.
When Castro began his speech, Ted Cruz, bloviater-in-chief and the only senator to attend was there and walked out. His flack said, “Sen. Cruz very much hopes that Castro learns the lessons of Nelson Mandela.” We can only hope Sen. Cruz learns them too.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
