Here’s a bit of counter programming for the holiday season that takes the seasonal classics and puts a spin on them.
Hartford’s TheaterWorks asked playwrights whose works played the theater to write a short play about 10 minutes or so, taking a young character from an iconic Christmas tale and revisiting them as an adult.
The result is the off-subscription premiere of “Christmas on the Rocks” and the writers are John Cariani (“Almost, Maine”), Jeffrey Hatcher (“Mrs. Mannerly”), Jacques Lamarre (“I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti”) , Matthew Lombardo (“High”), Theresa Rebeck (“The Understudy”), Edwin Sanchez (“Clean”) and Jonathan Tolins (“Buyer and Cellar“).
Think Charlie Brown, Tiny Tim and the kid from “Grinch” — and they all end up at a mysterious bar one lonely December night.
Producing artistic director Rob Ruggiero concieved the project and stages the show which runs Dec. 3 to 22 with a press opening on Dec. 6.
The show features Harry Bouvy (TheaterWorks’ “Fully Committed,” “Snakebit” and “Chesapeake”), Christine Pedi (Off-Broadway’s “Forbidden Broadway”) and Ronn Carroll (Trevor Nunn’s Broadway revival of “Oklahoma!” and the Lincoln Center premiere of “A Man Of No Importance.”)
Tickets are $35 to $50; $10 off for subscribers. Information:” 860-527-7838 and www.theaterworkshartford.org.
