Winter Olympics

On the national and international stages, the new year brings the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia (Feb. 7-12) as well as the first Super Bowl played in an open-air stadium in a cold-weather city (Feb. 2 in East Rutherford, N.J.). Among the Connecticut Olympians will be Julie Chu, pictured, of Fairfield in women's hockey and three players on the men's hockey team. Chu has won medals in three previous Olympics ¿ 2002 (silver), 2006 (bronze) and 2010 (silver). The three named to the men's U.S. Olympic hockey team are Hamden's Jonathan Quick, who plays goalie for the Los Angeles Kings and was the MVP of the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs; Greenwich-born Kevin Shattenkirk, who plays for the Colorado Avalanche; and Max Pacioretty, of New Canaan, who plays for the Montreal Canadiens.
